Sony Xperia Z2 vs. Huawei Mate 2

Updated on April 16, 2014

The Two Worlds

Sony Xperia Z2 is launched and is going to face tough competition from some of the most impressive mobile devices already present in the market. Huawei is a relatively new name and Mate 2 isn't exactly a direct competitor because a. It's Chinese and b. it isn't meant to compete with the likes of Xperia Z2. But this Chinese company has successfully established itself as one of the most popular mobile brands in recent times owing to the fact that they're producing decent smartphones and selling them at extremely attractive prices.

The Sony Xperia Z2 might be the best Android phone of 2014 because of some of the best features present in it, but on the other hand it's not meant for everyone especially if there are budget smartphones like Huawei Ascend Mate 2 with quite reasonable price that offer great value for money.

What do you prefer

Huawei Ascend Mate 2’s 6.1 inches screen is much larger than the 5.2 inches display in Xperia Z2. Xperia Z2 has a higher resolution at 1080 x 1920 as compared to Huawei Mate 2’s 720x1280, which together with a smaller display gives Z2 a much higher pixel density. The two handsets use different screen technologies. The Sony Xperia Z2 has an LCD display, while Huawei includes an LTPS panel, instead of IPS LCD. The Xperia Z2 provides better viewing angles along with a bright and vivid display without any oversaturated colors. The Huawei Mate 2, on the other hand, has a quite average display of 720p with no extra ordinary features.

Form Factor and Build Quality

The Sony Xperia Z2 and the Huawei Ascend Mate 2 are as different as it gets design-wise. The Xperia Z2, with its aluminum frame and glass body looks absolutely premium while the Huawei Ascend Mate 2 comes with a glossy plastic back which isn’t very stylish. Both these devices are hard to handle because of their huge size, but Xperia Z2 is relatively easier to carry handset. Xperia Z2 body provides complete water and dust protection. Huawei Ascend Mate 2 has very small bezels around its 6.1 inch display which makes handling a bit easier.

Camera

The Sony Xperia Z2 has a 20.7 Megapixels primary camera with 1/2.3” sensor size which comes with auto focus feature and LED flash. It also allows video capture in 4K resolution which is a huge plus point. The Front camera in Xperia Z2 takes pictures in 2.2 MP resolution. In the camera department Huawei Ascend Mate 2 isn’t much behind. It has a 13MP second-gen Sony-made BSI rear camera and a 5MP front camera which are both quite impressive and provide excellent results.

Internals

Sony Xperia Z2 is much superior to Huawei Ascend Mate 2. Sony Z2 has a 2.3 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 chip and Adreno 330 GPU. Huawei Ascend Mate 2 on the other hand has a 1.6GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 chip and an Adreno 305 GPU. Sony Xperia Z2 has 3GB RAM which is 50% more than that in Ascend Mate 2 (2GB). Software

In Xperia Z2, Sony has applied its own refined interface on top of Android 4.4.2 KitKat, which provides the handset with some new exciting functions and applications. The interface in Xperia Z2 is a slightly refined version of that present in Xperia Z1, with the same neat and professional looking icons and menus. Huawei has used the older version of Android, the 4.3 Jellybean for Ascend Mate 2 and has slightly modified it to provide users with their own Emotion UI. This interface is widget heavy and provides some extra features to the users without destroying the simplicity associated with Android OS.

The Xperia Z2 has a non-removable Li-Ion 3200 mAh battery, which provides a talk time of 15 hours on 2G and 19 hours on 3G. On the other hand, Huawei Ascend Mate 2 includes a very powerful Li-Ion 4050 mAh battery which provides a massive 25 hours of talk time on 3G.

Price Comparison

Sony Xperia Z2 with its attractive design and powerful features is expected to have a much higher price than the Huawei Ascend Mate 2. Huawei produces phones which are priced low enough to target a larger market. The price of Mate 2 cost in the range of $350 to $450 range, which is going to be at least $300 less than what we expect the Xperia Z2 to cost.

Verdict

Xperia Z2 is a much superior phone with its powerful quad-core 2.3GHz Snapdragon 801 chipset, impressive camera features and stylish design. Huawei Ascend Mate 2, on the other hand provides customers with a bigger display, high quality front and rear cams and an impressive software UI.
